Virtual adoption

Napoleon

Napoleon is an old boy, approximately 30+ years old. He came into our shelter after a police order. He was found by tourists badly limping. Two of his legs were tied together and the rope had cut a deep wound into one of its legs, which was covered with flies.

The poor donkey was clearly in pain and walked with difficulty. The tourists immediately sought help by calling the police and reporting the abuse. Napoleon was also malnourished, hesitant and fearful of people. But after receiving comprehensive healthcare that included a dental exam, an overall physical, care for both his hooves and the wound in his leg, he became another donkey. After the healing of his wound and as soon as he recovered and felt better he gained again his trust for humans.

Kokinia

Kokinia is a mule who came to our shelter in February 2021. She is over 40 years old and she was working all her life as a transport mule, hauling mainly building materials. She was lucky as she had a responsible owner who was taking good care of her.

When she was not able to work anymore her owner asked us to take her in because he was struggling to afford her upkeep as he still had 4 other equines to look after.  Of course, we couldn’t say no so the beautiful, old lady has been enjoying her retirement in our shelter ever since.

Please consider Kokinia for virtual adoption; she’ll thank you from the bottom of her heart!

Mitsos

Mitsos, a donkey of 30+ years, is an old fellow. He arrived at our equine shelter in February 2022. We had been trying to get him over to the shelter for two years before his arrival, as it had became clear he had a difficult time working (he walked too slowly and often fell) and that he needed to rest.

His owner was a very old man who was also having difficulty moving himself so our position was challenging as we had to be sensitive to the needs of both the animal and the human.

Fortunately, the owner, after pressure from his children, realized he no longer could take care of Mitsos so it decided that Mitsos would come to AZI’s equine shelter to rest. What a relief for us all!

So now Mitsos can relax and enjoy as many years as he has left to live.

Frideriki

This is Frideriki, a 25+ year old donkey who came in our shelter in April 2020. Her owner left Amorgos permanently due to health problems so Frideriki needed someone to take care her. The only solution for her was to come to our shelter since, due to her advanced age, she can no longer work so there was no other interest in her.

Frideriki is very smart donkey who loves human company very much but she becomes very possessive of the people she likes and jealous of anyone who approaches them.

She loves to have you scratch her ears, and you will always find her next to her best friend and fellow donkey Anna. Won’t you consider virtually adopting Frideriki?

Anna

Anna is a donkey who is more than 35 years old and who came to our shelter in August 2015. She came from a poor farming family. She carried many loads up the mountains in her lifetime and deserves a happy life in retirement.

Anna suffers from chronic pleurisy due to an old cold that was not cured. This makes her struggle to breathe so she gets tired very easy so it is a must for her to always be relaxed and restful, something she enjoys in our shelter.

Anna is a very sweet donkey with gold heart. She follow us around and she likes to rub her head on us. She would be the ideal pet and companion for someone but unfortunately in Amorgos it’s not customary for people to keep donkeys as pets.

However, she could be YOUR virtual pet! And she would be eternally grateful.

Margarita

Margarita is a senior cat, somewhere between 10 to 15 years old or maybe even more, who came to our Center in March 2022. She is blind possibly due to a stroke because her blindness happened all of a sudden. Some small neurological problems (e.g., she was swinging her head like a pendulum) cleared up after a deworming treatment.

She was taken from her home neighborhood after the stroke because people there were concerned about having “a sick” cat there so they called us to take her. Additionally, it was dangerous for her to remain there due to the fact that she was living next to a central road and with her blindness, it was a terrible danger.

Margarita has a very sweet nature, she loves all other animals and humans. She always asks for caresses.

Due to her old age, she has very little chance of being placed in a home so she will live in our shelter for the rest of her life. But she would love to be virtually adopted—won’t you consider being her friend and supporter?

Aramis

UPDATE JAN 2023—Aramis is now one and a half years old. He lives mostly outdoors together with his brother Porthos and many other cats in a colony that one of our volunteers takes care of. He is a huge cat now but his character remains a baby, so sweet and innocent.

Aramis and his 3 siblings were found on the streets of Amorgos, next to a grocery store. Apparently, they were removed from their mom and abandoned in a plastic box for fruits in Ormos of Aegiali. They were crying nonstop for a whole day, so a kindhearted girl decided to help them, after making sure that their mom was nowhere to be found. She bought milk and started feeding them and then she called us. The kittens came into our care and we started feeding and taking care of them every 2 hours.

Aramis is a smart and lazy cat who likes to sleep a lot, but also very affectionate and sweet.

Porthos

UPDATE JAN 2023—Porthos is now an adult cat at one and a half years old. He lives outside but really would prefer to be an indoor cat. He is constantly looking for a way in. When he finds an open door he burrows in and hides so that you do not see that he has entered. Then, suddenly, you find him sleeping in your bed and with his eyes he begs you to let him stay. This cat is suffering as an outside cat—he desperately needs a home! He is extremely cuddly and sweet! He is available for both virtual and actual adoption—won’t you consider helping this sweet boy?

He is neutered and vaccinated.

Zoi

JAN 2023 UPDATE—Zoi is the sweetest cat EVER! She is now 4 and a half years old and retains her mobility problems.

When she first arrived at our center, she was walking on her hind knees (and not on her feet)—the result of a permanent wound on her left hind leg. We do not know how it happened, but since she was like that for over a year before we rescued her, there was not much we could do. When Zoi was found she also had some neurological problems (her head was moving like a pendulum) but with treatment that was quickly resolved.

Recently Zoi was examined by an orthopedic vet (including X-rays) and it was confirmed that unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about her feet. The only possible solution would be to amputate the leg that is in the worst condition to avoid any risk of infection to the bone.

But since the other leg also has issues we weren’t sure she would be able to lift the weight of her body with only one leg, so that is a risk that for the moment we are not comfortable taking. Zoi had also some blood tests and it turns out she is positive for FIP (with titer 1/800) as well as positive for FIV.

However, she remains in good condition and does not present any problems beyond mobility due to the condition of her legs. We know that such an animal is very difficult to find a home but she is the sweetest cat we have ever met and whoever adopts her will certainly not regret it!

Here is a recent short video of her:

Due to these problems, Zoi needs to live only indoors. She can also be your virtual pet—she would be forever grateful!

Evridiki

JAN 2023 UPDATE—Evridiki, our beautiful blind cat, is now 2 and half years old and she has spent all her life in a room of our Center. Although positive for FIP, Evridiki has never shown any symptoms of her illness and is considered by her veterinarians to be a perfectly healthy cat.

We feel sorry for her and for the fact that she restricted to staying in one room of our shelter. She is desperately needs a home, but in the meantime, won’t you consider a virtual adoption?

(She is available for physical adoption too.)

Melpo

Melpo was found in the middle of the road in June of 2014 when she was only one and a half months old. She has grown up at our Center, but, because we could not find an adoptive home for her we released her into a safe area.

Unfortunately, five months ago, Melpo was hit by a car and her front leg had to be amputated. Since then she has stayed with us at the center and we have grown so fond of this small sweet cat whom we believe has a very noble character. She is quiet and undemanding and waits patiently for us to give her attention.

She is now two and a half years old, spayed, fully vaccinated and negative for the feline viruses FEL and FIV.

Below are photographs of Melpo as she first came to us, after her accident, and now, as a grown up girl. We have also included a short video of Melpo. Should you be interested in virtually adopting her, please contact us at azi.amorgos@gmail.com
