What does it mean to be a tourist? For some, it’s about relaxation and beautiful beaches. But for others, it’s about the connections we make, not just with people, but with every living soul we encounter.
Last summer, we witnessed four incredible stories of visitors who chose to give up their rest to save the animals of Amorgos.
Maria: Giving up the Sun for a Soul
Maria, a frequent visitor from Greece, proved once again that her heart belongs to the island's cats. When she found a cat at Levrosos beach with a severe respiratory infection and a heavy cough, she didn't think twice. She gave up her swim, missed her rest, and spent her day finding a cage and transporting "Maria" (as we named the cat) to our Katapola center. Thanks to her, this sweet old soul is recovering and will return to her neighborhood healthier than ever.
Johanna: A Heart Left in Aegiali
Johanna from France fell in love with Mythos during Easter and returned in July specifically for him. When Mythos tested positive for FIP, preventing him from joining her three cats in France, Johanna’s heart broke, but her compassion didn't stop. She decided to adopt Zak, another kitten she rescued from respiratory and eye infections. Soon, Zak will become a French citizen!
Katja & Fabio: Dedication Beyond Borders
Katja and Fabio didn't just offer volunteer work (driving 42km each time to reach our center); they actively looked for those in need. They managed to trap Jack, a limping stray with severe dental pain. While his leg injury was old, we were able to remove four rotten teeth and treat his stomatitis. Katja and Fabio are now covering Jack's medical costs and his food for the entire year.
Beautiful People, Stronger Mission
These stories give us the strength to continue. These "beautiful people" remind us that wherever you are from, you can make a difference.
Want to be a hero too? You don't have to be on the island to help. Your donations fund the medicine and care that these volunteers help us deliver.
